Thoroughgood is a community in Virginia Beach Virginia just south of Bayside and the Bayville Golf Club, east of Independence Boulevard and north of Wishart Road. This is been considered one of the most desirable neighborhoods in North Virginia Beach. Nestled between Chic's Beach and Lynnhaven River, Thoroughgood is a beautiful neighborhood with large, tree-lined streets, quiet neighborhoods, and beautiful diversity. Homes were built in the 1960s on up and start at about $390,000.
History of Thoroughgood
Thoroughgood has a rich history as well as it's home to the Adam Thoroughgood House [video above], a national historic landmark that is possibly the oldest surviving colonial home in Virginia Beach. This home was believed to have been built in 1680 with complete restoration in 1957 by the city of Virginia Beach. Adam Thoroughgood established a settlement in the early 1600s as an indentured servant and was granted more than 5300 acres in this area. This was the largest land grant in Virginia to date and now contains several neighborhoods including Thoroughgood, Thoroughgood Colony, Lake Smith Terrace, Gracetown, Thoroughgood Estates, Bay Lake Pines, Hermitage townhomes, Bayville Park, Church Point, and Ocean Park.
The historical home is open for guided tours six days a week throughout the year and holds certain events and activities. The home contains a collection of 17th and 18th-century furniture, colonial costumes, and crafts. The community has definitely grown to include these other neighborhoods, more modern developments, and residential subdivisions.
Thoroughgood Schools
Residents are part of the Virginia Beach City Public School department and most homes in Thoroughgood are zoned for the Thoroughgood elementary school, either the Great Neck Middle school or Independence middle school, and the Princes Anne high school or the Frank W Cox high school, depending on where the home is located. Students may also attend Kemps Landing Magnet School for grades 2 through 8, but this is about 10 to 12 miles from most homes in Thoroughgood. The school receives a 10 out of 10 by great schools.org for academic progress, test scores, and equity.

It's easy to see why Thoroughgood is an extremely popular place to call home. It's close to the beach, the Western branch of the Lynnhaven River, the Bayville golf club and Bayville Farms Park, nature preserves, and plenty of services and amenities at the intersection of Shore Drive and Northampton Boulevard (Highway 13). Here you'll find a Kroger, all these, banks, markets, grocery stores, and more. Just a couple of minutes south along Independence Boulevard are several more services such as a CVS, restaurants, and the Shelton Park elementary school, across the street from Thoroughgood elementary school.
Several homes have lakefront property around Lake Charles and Thoroughgood Cove as well as Witch Duck Bay and Lynnhaven River. Follow Independence Boulevard a little further south and at the intersection of Haygood Road, you'll find more shopping and restaurants such as Dollar Tree, Marshalls, and the Haygood shopping center or head West along Wesleyan Drive for even more commercial areas.
